David Lay still considers himself a newcomer to playing music. Even though he has only played bluegrass for 10 years, he is no stranger to great music. His father was a United Methodist preacher for 50 years and introduced David to the music of the great artist in the gospel circuit at the early age of five. His daddy took him along to hear some of the all-time great quartets at the all night singing conventions. Some of his favorites were The Statesmen, The Blackwood Brothers, and the Chuck Wagon Gang. David picked up a guitar at an early age but never played to any real extent. When David met Linda, 10 years ago, he was playing bass for a local gospel group and had a quiet, shy attitude. He rarely looked at the audience and had never sung in public or even in front of his family. Linda pulled David’s talents to the surface and pushed him to play guitar and to sing. He only had 10 weeks to perfect both the guitar and vocals because they were married, after a very short courtship, and his debut performance was the day after the wedding.
