Sammy Shelor is a legend in the bluegrass world. He was born and raised on Route 58 in the Meadows of Dan, Virginia. He has been playing the banjo since the early age of five, being taught by his grandfathers. Sammy has come along way since then and has mastered the banjo setting him apart from other banjoist. He has the most impeccable timing and drive which have made him an icon in the bluegrass field. When you are first learning to play you want to have your own style so your not compared to other musicians, Sammy has definitely achieved this goal. As soon as you hear the first couple of bars in a song you know when Sammy is playing. When other singers are looking for musicians to put together a recording, he is a must have musician. You can count on your hands the musicians who are the most sought after artist and his name is always on the list. Sammy started at age 19 with the Height of Grass, which changed to The Virginia Squires. He joined with the Lonesome River Band in 1990 and is now the band leader and they are still going strong. He has many successful recordings under his belt: The Virginia Squires, The Lonesome River Band, Leading Roll, (his solo project) and has played banjo on countless other recordings.
